Dr. Ralph Weisheit

“Why News Matters to Academics”

Dr. Ralph A. Weisheit joined the Department of Criminal Justice at Illinois State University in 1982. He is currently a Distinguished Professor (1998) of Criminal Justice at ISU. He is the recipient of several awards during his career; Outstanding College Researcher in 1987; Outstanding University Researcher in 1989; ACJS Academy Fellow in 1994; and in 2019 became the namesake and recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award by the Rural Criminology Division of the American Society of Criminology. He is the author of nine books, including Research Methods for Rural Criminologists (coedited with Jessica Rene Peterson and Artur Pytlarz, 2022), Methamphetamine: Its History, Pharmacology, and Treatment (co-authored with William L. White, 2009), and in its 3rd Edition, Pursuing Justice (co-authored with Frank Morn, 2019). He has conducted extensive research on rural crime and justice and has published more than 45 journal articles, numerous book chapters, and solicited essays. He has appeared in the Frontline documentary film series and on the news program 60 Minutes. His work has been reported in the Atlantic Monthly, U.S. News & World Report, The Washington Post, and U.S.A. Today.

As a recovery home for women, Magnolia House is a 30–60-day inpatient rehab for Women in Walhalla, SC, located in Beautiful and Scenic Oconee County.

Our Mission is to Empower Women Toward Recovery. We strive to give women hope, the tools they will need, and the strength to persevere in the face of the many challenges they will face on their unique recovery journey. Our team will assist them in learning how to function successfully in the community and helping them restore lives and relationships with their families. Magnolia House will achieve this mission through a combination of an in-house intensive 30–60-day recovery program and non-residential intervention and educational programs.
